Library Services
The reference desk is staffed by librarians who help answer all kinds
of questions. Need homework information? The CEO of a business? The
value of your 1986 Ford Tempo? The best way to put up drywall? We'll
give you a hand with these and hundreds of other questions, too. We
also offer special sources, like college catalogs for Illinois, cd-rom
products such as Info-Trac, Chicago Tribune and Phone Disc for phone
numbers throughout the country.
The Internet is available to use in the Library. Please click here
to view our policy. Please feel
free to use all our services.
Our children's department, Kids World, is a kid-friendly environment.
Kids World serves kids from birth to Gr. 5. For school assignments we
have Internet, MS Office programs, and school textbooks (ask how you
can get free copies from the textbooks!). For pleasure we have puzzles,
puppets, kits, Storytime, and many other programs. The "ASK ME" desk is
always willing to help.
We offer programs for all ages all year long. Examples of past programs
are bus trips to Garfield Park Conservatory and Lincoln Park Zoo; Basic
Internet Classes; workshops; and drawing comic book characters. Some
programs have small fees, and most require advanced registration. To
keep up to date on our current offerings, click on the
Calendar of Events.
Let your kids meet and play with some new friends and encourage
reading, too. One hour story sessions for ages 3 - 8 are offered weekly
by the children's librarian. A half-hour lapsit session is available
for ages 2 - 3. The checkout desk will have the schedules and sign-up
sheets.

information.
Our meeting rooms will hold
100 people and are available to non-profit and for-profit groups (fees
may apply). The meeting rooms must be reserved in advance. Please
contact the Answers Desk for more information.
Books and videos in Polish for adults and children are available for
checkout, and we can order materials in other foreign languages from
other libraries in the Metropolitan Library System. Check with the
Answers Desk for information.

for a partial list of our Adult Polish Language materials. If you live in Norridge or Harwood Heights, don't forget to check out
Mango Languages. This database helps you learn 48 different languages & includes an English for Polish Speakers module. All users may access the database from within the library. Ask at the Answers Desk for more information.
Through the Government Assisted Program, materials are available in a
variety of formats for those who have disabilities. Call us if you're
interested and think you qualify.
Unable to use the library in the traditional way? Eisenhower's
Homebound Program is designed to aid people in Harwood Heights and
Norridge, IL who are unable to come to the library. This program
includes all the services and materials the library provides. A
reference librarian will assist in selecting and delivering materials
to your home.
This is a one-to-one assistance program so that each patron receives
just what they need, or want. The scope is as varied as our patrons. It
could be keeping up with favorite authors, or asking about a waiting
list for new book releases. It could be a preference for large type
books, or books on cassette, having a video delivered, or requesting
magazines from our collection. This also includes non-fiction
activities, such as requesting cookbooks for a new diet regime,
information on vitamins to baseball cards, or books on how to improve
computer skills. Everyone is different in their needs and we try to
accommodate everyone on a personal level.
The only restriction is that you need to live in Harwood Heights or
Norridge, and be in need of assistance. If you think you could benefit
from this service, please call 867-7828 and ask for reference.
If you're still having trouble finding the goldfish books or you can
never get to the travel videos on Hawaii, or need instruction on how to
use SWAN, we offer group library tours. We'll walk you through, show
you where everything is and answer your questions. Please call the
Answers Desk to set up a time.
Both the Children's and Community Services librarians will be glad to
come to your school to do booktalks, or, for younger students, to read
stories. Please call Kids World to schedule a date.
Battle of the Books competitions run each year in January/February
for children grades four through six. Schools which participated in the
2007 competition from Norridge and Harwood Heights were Union Ridge,
Pennoyer, Giles and Leigh and St. Eugene. More Information.
