Interlibrary Loan

Our Librarians make every attempt to anticipate your book, music, and movie needs. Of course, we cannot buy everything. If we do not have what you are looking for, we may be able to request an item from another library.

SWAN "Direct" Loan

A direct loan means that we ask one of the 80+ libraries that make up our materials consortium, called SWAN, to send us an item we do not own for you to check out here. While we cannot guarantee that an item will arrive within a certain time frame, it usually takes about 7-10 days to receive an item. We will call or email you to let you know when it arrives. When you are finished with the item, return it to us and we send it back to the loaning library. This service is free, minus any charges for overdue, lost, or damaged items.

In-state Interlibrary Loan - For Residents of Norridge or Harwood Heights

If you live in Norridge or Harwood Heights and are looking for an item that none of the libraries in SWAN own, we may be able to request the item from one of the other libraries in Illinois. An in-state (but out of SWAN) request will take at least 2 weeks to receive. Again, the loaning library sends the item here, you check it out, return it to us, and we send it back to the loaning library. This service is free, minus any charges for overdue, lost, or damaged items.

Out-of-state Interlibrary Loan - For Residents of Norridge or Harwood Heights

Sometimes there are no libraries in Illinois that own an item you need. Fortunately, if you live in Norridge or Harwood Heights, we may be able to borrow the item from a library outside of Illinois. If we are able to locate the item and if the holding library will send it, You will be charged $5.00 per item. If you return an item late, damaged, or lose an item, additional fees apply as determined by the loaning library. As is the case for in-state interlibrary loan requests, out-of-state requests will take at least 2 weeks to receive.
