11th Annual 2018 Children’s & Teen Choice Book Awards

Every year, Every Child a Reader, a nonprofit charity dedicated to inspiring a love of reading in children and teens, is proud to announce the winners of the 11th Annual Children’s & Teen Choice Book Awards. Nominees in the picture book and middle-grade categories were selected by children in five regional school systems; books for teens were nominated online at TeenReads.com. The five finalists in each of the categories were then voted on online as well as by voting ballots submitted by groups organized by teachers and librarians.

K – 2nd Grade Book of the Year
Poor Louie by Tony Fucile
Louie’s life is great! A walk on the leash every morning, ice cream on Sundays, snuggling in bed at night with Mom and Dad. Even the playdates with Mom’s friends — despite their little crawling creatures who pull Louie’s ears — aren’t all that bad. But then things get weird: cold food on the floor, no room in the bed, and lots of new stuff coming into the house in pairs — two small beds, two little sweaters, two seats in the stroller. Does that bode double trouble ahead, or could there be a happier surprise in store for Louie? With perfect visual pacing, Tony Fucile takes a familiar story and gives it a comic spin.

3rd – 4th Grade Book of the Year
50 Wacky Things Animals Do by Tricia Martineau Wagner and Carles Ballesteros
The planet Earth is a big place, and it’s filled with all kinds of animals that do some pretty crazy things! For example, did you know that giraffes clean their ears with their tongues? Or that food passes through a giant squid’s brain before going to its stomach? It’s true!

50 Wacky Things Animals Do describes 50 unbelievable animals and the things they do that seem too crazy to be true – but are! Whether incredible, funny, or just plain gross, these peculiar and fascinating animal behaviors will surprise and delight fun-fact lovers and future zoologists alike. You’ll have so much fun you’ll be doing handstands like you were a skunk (something they really do!) and laughing like a hyena (how they really communicate!).

5th – 6th Grade Book of the Year
The Losers Club by Andrew Clements
Sixth grader Alec can’t put a good book down.

So when Principal Vance lays down the law—pay attention in class, or else—Alec takes action. He can’t lose all his reading time, so he starts a club. A club he intends to be the only member of. After all, reading isn’t a team sport, and no one would want to join something called the Losers Club, right? But as more and more kids find their way to Alec’s club—including his ex-friend turned bully and the girl Alec is maybe starting to like—Alec notices something. Real life might be messier than his favorite books, but it’s just as interesting.

Teen Book of the Year
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr. But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.
