ISLAND WITHIN A CITY BOOK COMMITTEE

Editor Proposal Discussion—
Penny and Dan reached out to a number of potential editors and have received a couple of proposals so far. Proposals were received from Drum Mond Books and Brian Landon. They all came from Chicago Women in Publishing per Penny. Director Wittmann thinks they should get a few more before they make a decision. Trustee Ringelstein thinks they can have a cover design contest at the High School. Trustee Parent thought this was a great idea.

Feedback from Laura Enright—
Penny gave a copy of a letter from Laura Enright to the committee. In the letter, Laura thinks the timeline is too ambitious. She would like to submit the whole book sometime in February. Trustee Magnelli thinks maybe she can bring chapter 1 in December. Trustee Magnuson is concerned about Laura having to rewrite the whole thing if it is not going in the direction they want. Trustee Parent wants to see chapters indicating how far along she has come as to where she is at in the writing process. He would like to know what the thesis is. Trustee Ringelstein would like a verbal update on how the book is shaping up. She would like to see her style and approach. Dawn Parent is concerned that Laura is not farther in the writing process. She has no idea on how the book is going to tie into a cohesive piece and she cannot see where it is going. Trustee Ringelstein advised that they have to let Laura get there. She thinks in December they will have something and they should give her a fair shot. Trustee Parent asked about the payments that have been made to Laura and he commented that they would have paid for ¾ of the book by the time she gives the progress to the Board in December. Trustee Ross thinks that Laura has an established record and the book will have a long life once done. Trustee Adams thinks it will be good to see sample chapters in December and she is glad Laura is open to comments and suggestions. Trustee Braun agrees with the whole committee. Trustee Magnuson thinks we will get a good product due to her commitment. Penny thinks they should let her write the book. She thinks the sample pages should not have been given to the committee so early. The committee would like some finished chapters or at least the first chapter. Trustee Parent thinks it would be nice to get a working bibliography. Penny thinks that would take away from the writing. Trustee Ringelstein thinks they should give her some space. Trustee Ringelstein said that if any of the committee members want to provide information to Laura that they should go through her and she will reach out to Laura. The committee agreed to request two revised complete chapters, a rundown on how the book is condensing, and a list of whom she has spoken to. Dawn Parent would like to see from Laura where the story is going. She wants to know what the theme of the book is and how they all tie together. She wants to personally see where the story is going. She feels there needs to be a unifying theme and some sort of thread that runs through the book and ties it all together. Trustee Ringelstein thinks that you need to gather all the information first and then find the thread.
