Call Me Athena by Colby Cedar Smith

Call Me Athena

“It is at this moment that I decide. I am not a Good.Greek.Girl. I am a Modern.American.Woman.”

This book is historical fiction presented in verse.

The story is told from the perspective of three people; Mary living in Detroit in 1933, Georgios living in Greece in 1915, and Jeanne living in France in 1915.

Mary is the author’s grandmother, the daughter of French and Greek immigrants. Mary has mixed feelings because her parents and close relatives are very old world in their ideas. Mary longs to be a modern American woman (the quote above is from her story).

The relationship between the three perspectives will reveal itself when you read it. The book itself was beautiful and the stories were engaging.
