Michelle Zauner, from the notable indie band, Japanese Breakfast, is a poignant storyteller as she weaves music, food, family, grief, and love in this deeply personal memoir.
In this beautiful coming-of-age story, Zauner tells of growing up as the only Asian-American kid in her school in Oregon, of her struggling relationship with her mother, her life in college, her love and connection of Korean food, and her meet cute with her now husband.
The center of this story though is how Zauner deals with her feelings and identity after learning about her mother’s terminal diagnosis. After reading this, it made me want to learn my own roots and learn more about my heritage.
Also, I called my mom.
