Cupcake Diaries: Katie and the Cupcake Cure (The Graphic Novel) by Coco Simon

Book cover for Cupcake Diaries #1: Katie and the Cupcake Cure

I’m still kind of in shock over what Callie did to me today. How can she say we’re still best friends when she’s not acting like a friend at all?

Katie starts middle school, but her first day optimism takes a hit when her best friend appears to dump her for the “popular girls club.” It’s not all doom-and-gloom, though as Katie meets new friends and finds a delicious place for herself in the newly created “Cupcake Club.”

Cupcake Diaries is the latest chapter book series that is getting graphic novel makeover. The plot breaks no new ground for those familiar with the older chapter book series, but the comic panels freshen the tale inviting fans of Telgemeier’s Smile series, Martin’s The Baby-sitter’s Club graphic novel series and Hale’s Friends series to give it a try. The light-hearted plot makes this graphic novel perfect for third through sixth grades looking for a quick read. The second book, Mia in the Mix, is already out and picks up where the first book left off- but from Mia’s point of view.
