ISLAND WITHIN A CITY BOOK COMMITTEE

Progress Report—
Director Wittmann advised that Dan had an interesting interview with the brother of the person who owns Pasta Fresh on Harlem avenue. They live in Norridge and the brother owns a couple of shops. Dan sat in on an outdoor banquet and he enjoyed food and listening to accordion players during the interview. He had a fascinating time. Julie pulled up all of Laura’s interviews. Julie is working on transcribing them all. She reported to the committee all the interviews that she is working on transcribing. There are seventeen completed essays and six in progress. There will be a recording station set up at the 50th anniversary festival on October 1. Director Wittmann would like a non-staff member from the committee work the recording station. Trustee Ringelstein and Trustee Magnelli advised that they could work at the recording station. She also advised that they will have the Veteran’s breakfast this year and there will be a form for them to fill so we could get some information from them and facts about what they did.

Proposed Chapter One—
Director Wittmann submitted the introduction to Chapter One to the Committee. The members were pleased with what Director Wittmann wrote. She will continue writing Chapter two.

Next Steps—
Director Wittmann reported that she and Trustee Ringelstein discussed extending the due date for the essays and they agreed that they would let people know that they would be due by the end of the year. They would extend it as need be. She will report the new due date in her article for the fall newsletter. She will also have Chris Clark include the new due date. Trustee Ringelstein asked if they could offer the essay prompt form to people attending programs and give them a few minutes to fill it out. She also recommended we keep a pile at service desks. Julie advised that maybe we could have the “how are we doing cards” available. Director Wittmann will start working on Chapter two and she recommended meeting in September before the 50th anniversary party.

The committee will meet next on September 21, 2023 at 7:00 P.M.
