Kids Materials

Kids World makes available materials that serve children’s informational, recreational and cultural needs for an age range from birth through grade six, and for all levels of ability.

School Books
Kids World makes every effort to have a copy of the local school’s textbooks and workbooks. Textbooks are not available for check out nor can they be taken from Kids World.

During the school year, Norridge and Harwood Heights cardholders may receive ten free pages a day to copy from the school books. After that, black and white copies cost 10 cents per page.

If your child forgets their book at school, you will find the library’s copy in Kids World. Simply bring the book up to the Kids Desk if copies need to be made.

Study and Reference Books
The Study Book Collection is made up of informational books that have been selected specifically to help with school projects. To ensure that these books are available to everyone in a timely fashion, these books check out for only a one week time period.

The Reference Collection contains informational books. These books tend to contain more information than those in the regular nonfiction collection. In order to ensure that materials are available for school projects, even for those last minute students, these books checkout for only one day. They cannot be renewed. The Reference Collection is intended for in-library use.

Both the Study Book Collection and the Reference Collection cover a wide range of topics. They are located at the beginning of the Kids World Nonfiction Collection. These collections are a great place to turn to when a student is having difficulty finding materials in relation to their school project.

Workbooks and How to’s
There are a lot of workbooks spaced throughout the Nonfiction Collection that are intended to help with various school subjects. We have additional math workbooks as well as books to help write school papers.

Audiobooks
Audiobooks can be a helpful tool for a struggling reader either by reading along with the audio book or by simply listening to a book they are perhaps not ready to read on their own. Kids World audiobooks come in CDs (to listen to on a computer or CD player), or Playaway devices (just need a pair of headphones.) We also have a wide variety available to residents for downloading to a smart phone or tablet.

Weekly Crafts
During the Storytime Session, there is a free craft each week. The crafts can be found in the red basket by the Kids Magazines. The crafts are packaged to be taken home, but glue sticks may be signed out at the Kids Desk if your child would prefer to make the craft in the Library.

Free Coloring Pages
Every day, each child may receive one free coloring page at the library. The week’s selection of coloring page are located by the Kids Magazines. Crayons, markers, or colored pencils may be signed out at the Kids Desk to be used at one of the tables in Kids World. The coloring tools must stay in Kids World.

Puzzles
Wooden puzzles for kids to solve are located in racks in the Picture Book Area. The puzzles are not available for checkout, but are a fun way to spend some time at the Library.

Toy Bins
Kids World has a few toy bins to play with in the Library. They can be found in the Picture Book area. The toy bins will rotate each month for new things to play with. Please help us by making sure the pieces are put back into the bins when you are finished.

Big Books and Pop-Up Books
The Big Book collection is located in the Picture Book Area, next to the purple arch. Pop-Up Book Collection is located by the Kids magazines. Both collections cannot be checked out, but are available to have fun with in the library.

Kits
Kits are items that have multiple parts, some of them include phonics materials like collections of word family books and phonic wheels. Kits are located in red bags in the Picture Book Area.
