Lucy by the Sea by Elizabeth Strout

Lucy by the Sea

“There was for me during this time a sense of being dazed. As though, in a way, I was not capable of taking in everything that was happening in this world.”

Lucy and her ex-husband William leave New York at the beginning of the pandemic to live in a small town in Maine where they are able to rent a house by the water.

Lucy is the narrator and she tells us what she remembers of her past with her husband and their two daughters, as well as her husband David who passes away just prior to the pandemic. Lucy misses David. She fears she will never see her New York apartment again. Yet there is something comforting about being with William again.
