Polish Heritage Book Club: The Zookeeper’s Wife

Thursday, February 08, 2018, 3:00 PM.

Our English-language book discussion group focuses on literature related to Poland and Polish culture. This month’s book will be The Zookeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman.

When Germany invaded Poland, bombs devastated Warsaw – and the city’s zoo along with it. With most of their animals dead, zookeepers Jan and Antonina Zabinski turn the zoo into a refuge for prosecuted Jews. Diane Ackerman engages us in the lives of the zoo animals, their keepers, and their hidden visitors, shows us how refusing to give in to the fear kept alive an atmosphere of innocence even as Europe crumbled.
