“This life is but the childhood of our immortality.”
Writer, poet, and playwright Denis Johnson passed away this week at age 67. Best know for his 1992 collection, Jesus’ Son, a series of inter-related short stories about drug addicts in rural America, Johnson was a National Book Award winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist for his war novel Tree of Smoke. In 2012, for his novella Train Dreams he was again nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.
“Denis was one of the great writers of his generation,” Johnson’s publisher, Jonathan Galassi, said in statement. “He wrote prose with the imaginative concentration and empathy of the poet he was.”
A new collection of stories, The Largess of the Sea Maiden, is scheduled for release in January, 2018.
