Fatima has always known that the seed found her, rather than the other way around. When a powerful politician catches wind of Fatima’s special seed, he offers a great deal of money to her family for it. Fatima’s parents sell her seed, unaware of the unspeakable consequences to come.
A year later, Fatima becomes the center of a horrific tragedy, and loses everything, including her own name. As far as she (now known as Sankofa) can guess, Death has given her a great and terrible gift, which takes time to hone. Her reputation precedes her, and she spends the next seven years traveling, and offering the gift of death to those who truly need it, and using it as a very effective method of self-defense.
Where is the seed, and the man who stole it? How can things get back to normal for Sankofa?
Okorafor’s gift for creating a likable and well-rounded character shines through in this story. This is a quick sci fi read about a young girl with remarkable powers, forced to take on far too much far too young.
