Rick Atkinson has won the 2020 George Washington Prize for The British are Coming: The War for America, Lexington to Princeton, 1775-1777. The Prize recognizes the year’s best new books on early American history.

The three institutions that sponsor the prize — Washington College, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and George Washington’s Mount Vernon — are devoted to furthering historical scholarship that contributes to the public understanding of the American past.

Rick Atkinson, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning An Army at Dawn and two other superb books about World War II, has long been admired for his deeply researched, stunningly vivid narrative histories.
