Riley Sager, author of Final Girls and Survive the Night, is back with another unnerving and suspenseful thriller, this time set in the rarified world of the uber-wealthy and their Vermont vacation homes.
Casey Fletcher is an A-list actress hiding away from the paparazzi at her lake house doing her best to drink herself into oblivion after the death of her husband who drowned in the lake last summer. Alcohol is one of the only things that helps her forget. The other is spying on Tom and Katherine Royce, the prestigious couple who live in the ultra-modern glass house across the lake. Tom is a tech billionaire and Katherine is a retired supermodel.
After Casey saves Katherine from drowning, the two start to become fast friends and Casey begins to suspect that her neighbors’ relationship might not be as glamorous as it first appears. Tom’s company is failing and he relies on his wife’s money to keep things afloat. She suspects “He’d kill me if I ever tried to leave him.”
When Katherine mysteriously disappears, that’s exactly what Casey believes has happened. But who would believe the suspicions of a drunken actress who spies on her neighbors?
Every couple of chapters, The House Across the Lake will make you think you know where it is heading, but you’ll probably be wrong. Riley Sager’s trademark twists will leave you shocked, surprised, and maybe even a little bit outraged.
