The Lost Library by Rebecca Stead & Wendy Mass

Book cover for "The Lost Library"

“Are you saying very important things, dear cat?”

Who installed the Little Free Library on the town square last night and why is the orange cat so protective of it? Eleven-year-old Evan traces time backward after discovering that some of the old books had been checked out to his father (as a teenager) and returned on the day that the town library was destroyed by fire. He figures out what happened after befriending the (friendly) ghosts who were left behind and coaxing his part in the story out of his reluctant father.

This short chapter book, offering brief chapters from alternating points of view, will appeal to readers ages 8-12, especially those with a soft spot for libraries, ghosts, thoughtful cats and/or hungry mice.
