The next Gone Girl? Seems as if every suspense novel that comes out is touted as the next Gone Girl, but nothing ever is.
Leila Slimani’s new novel is a perfectly wrought, taut piece of psychological fiction that never fails apart. I picked up the slim book as a fast read since it’s only 250 pages long but soon slowed down in order to savor the elegance of the writing. It’s a horror story, there’s no doubt about that. The first sentence is “The baby is dead.” But, how we get there is a long journey through the tangled mind of The Perfect Nanny.
