The Wood Burn Book by Rachel Strauss

The Wood Burn Book

Wood burning is an easy and fun way to customize and personalize wooden objects. I have dabbled in it myself and love the low cost entry point, and versatility.

The Wood Burn Book is a handy guide for getting started or taking your skills to the next level. It includes thoughtful comparisons of different types of wood burning machines and tips – plus easy and approachable tool care guidance. The book has a great survey of woods and different burning surfaces – including canvas and leather!

The examples are thorough, from start to finish – including prep, design transfer, adding color, finishing, and hanging hardware installation.  Where this book really shines is in the sumptuous exploration of texture. Photos from an angle really highlight the look of different techniques. There are tons of ideas for adding color with a wide variety of paints, inks, stains, markers, and more.

On page 50-51, you will find a finish comparison chart which includes cost and food safety – plus a visual comparison over colors. The projects are elegant and clever. Some of my faves are: veneer thank you cards, a customized canvas backpack, and a house portrait.
